storage insurance

Not sure if this is PPI.
Please note if you are using storage. If the company say 'you must take out insurance with them because The Storage Association insist upon it'. This is not the case. It is recommended by them but it is not mandatory.

  • I have just ‘realised’ I’ve been paying £18 per month for storage insurance for the last 18 months or so - I was told items have to be insured for a minimum of £3000 and duly took it out.
Forward to pandemic, looking for ways to save money did research on storage insurance, and find I can organise this myself at £14 per YEAR!
I am going to make a complaint and request refund, for mis information.

I'd hazard a guess you won't get anywhere with this, if they told you you needed to have insurance, that was the point you should have shopped around. If you chose to take out their more expensive cover, caveat emptor

    Only PPI is PPI.

    So, definitely not PPI then.

Why would anyone, who stores their items in a purposely designed secure unit  need insurance?  What is the insurance protecting against?  Fire, unlikely.  Theft, unlikely.  Damage?  I do not have insurance with my storage company and it is not a requirement by the Storage Association.  It took rather a contorted discussion with them to admit that insurance is not a mandatory.  But, still, the receptionists/staff at most storage units insist it is.  This could be a case for trades description.  The company I have stored my things with do not insist on insurance.

Why? Possibly because that's what the company that rents the space demands. It doesn't matter if a central group say it's not a requirement, if the business wants it, that's the rule. If someone is unhappy with that clause they could take the business elsewhere. Alternatively if there is no requirement from the firm to have it and the staff say there is, then yes report them.

I went to several warehouses and all told our bog standard furniture would have to be insured.  This is mis-selling.  I imagine, the warehouse storage companies have to be insured so if anything untoward happened then they will claim and compensate their customers.
