Compensation from EDF

Can I pick brains please? I switched supplier earlier this year from EDF to EON. There were delays from EDF and they then presented me with a large bill that needing paying. This was a surprise as I thought I was paying the correct amount. However, after firstly demanding all of it, I asked them to accept payments to allow me to pay off. I cancelled my direct debit as I was scared they would collect the whole amount and take me overdrawn. I explained all of this to them on several chats online. Firstly I was told I could only spread over 3 months then eventually they said if I rang one of their other depts, I could do an instalment plan. This I did. I organised an instalment plan and the person I spoke to said he would organise the DD. I forgot about it, thinking this had been done. Then I received a red default letter. I did another chat online. I could see the instalment plan on my menu but was told there was no DD. He said he would have to cancel the plan to organise the DD, it didnt work. I tried later after alot of faffing around, still didnt work. Rang again and was told a DD couldnt be set up as I had a closed account. anyway, I have had alot of stress, inconvenience and wasted time because of their errors. They have admitted them but I asked for a goodwill gesture of £50 but have been offered £20. Is this reasonable? I now have to pay off the old bill with them but am now also paying EON so it isnt easy and I am mad with them for being so inefficient. thoughts please welcome

Entirely your fault. Accept £200

The stress was all self-inflicted though? If you'd been on top of your bills, none of this would have happened. I don't know why they've offered £20, but how about you accept it and donate it to a charity of your choosing?0

As above. It is your responsibility to ensure you are paying enough to cover your Bill's.
Taking regular meter readings and comparing your use to what you are paying would have avoided this situation.
Take the £20 and use it towards paying off your bill. To be quite Frank EDF have been very good giving you anything.
And then take more notice of your new account with EON and ensure you are paying for the energy you are using.0 -
I do hope you are managing your Eon account better than the Eon one.
Are you regularly reading your meter and giving the readings to Eon ? Do you look at your online account ?
Have a look at it now - is your account in credit or debit ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Not a lot of sympathy for being lazy and not keeping on top of your account.
This is probably not what you want to hear but, stop whinging, take the £20 which you dont actually deserve and put a bit more effort into managing your account in future.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Sort of pay for what you use .
BUT that needs a variable direct debit that some may find hard in the winter months .0 -
I prefer the monthly DD, it means that I dont have to pay a ginormous bill of £300-£400 or so just after Xmas & March when the quarterly ones roll in or in my case up to £180 at the end of December for just ones consumption.
I'd much rather have it evenly spread it over the 12 months rather than having to lash out random amounts every month or quarter. It's free credit or if you prefer any interest you might have gained by being in credit in the summer is cancelled out by being in debit during the winter.
However if you ignore your bills or can't be bothered to check them against meter readings (even if you do have a smart meter) and make sure that your DD is covering your consumption then you deserve to get caught out if it all goes wrong.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Er, thanks for the useful posts and no thanks to the very rude ones. There are various assumptions here which aren't particularly nice. To be honest, I am surprised, just don't comment, read the post and think what you like, but I am not inefficient or lazy and it certainly wasn't my fault. If I am told, when asked, I am paying the right amount and then when the final bill comes very late, it is clear I wasn't, how is that my fault and make me lazy? I have a smart meter fitted by them which apparently stopped working at some stage. I am very on top of all my bills thank you. It was their error and they have admitted that. Furthermore, if you read my post, they continued to make matters worse by not setting up the DD, cancelling the instalment plan. Again they have confirmed it was all their fault.0
