Money Moral Dilemma: Should I have to pay extra for sitting with my friends on a flight?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
I recently went on holiday with a group of friends. They discussed paying a bit more to sit together on the plane, and I went along with it as I thought it'd be about £7 extra each way. My friend paid in advance for the group, and I later found out it was £25 extra each way. I'd never have agreed to it if I'd known the cost - but should I just pay up to avoid an awkward conversation?

Unfortunately the MSE team can't always answer money moral dilemma questions as contributions are often emailed in or suggested in person. They are intended to be enjoyed as a point of debate and discussed at face value.

  • If you weren't organising it you should have asked up front what the cost was. Now, yes, you should pay up as you 'went along with it' and your friend booked and paid on that premise.

Somewhat lame dilemma: is it reasonable to make your friend pay for you?
  • You agree, you pay. If you had a ceiling on how much you'd pay, you should have made this clear before agreeing.

Waits for the usual suspects to appear and claim this is made up....

If you agreed without either knowing or asking how much it would be then of course you should pay. If the person booking said it would be £7 and then booked at £25 without asking I'd be extremely unhappy, but would probably pay up if they were a good friend. If it was done through a friend of a friend I'd probably tell them to whistle for is.

How was your friend supposed to know what your limit was if you didn't tell them?

Another pointless "money moral dilemma", I do wonder what MSE get out of this sort of thread.

Of course you pay, your friend has already paid for you. Why should your friend be out of pocket?
  • You should have asked beforehand how much it was going to cost. It’s not fair to not pay the friend because of your mistake sorry

pay up if you want to remain friends, otherwise refuse.
  • The question ought to be - 'why on earth can airlines get away with charging for sitting with the rest of a group'. If groups are separated it results in many people wandering up & down the aisle to chat with their friends.
