Credit Card for Australia spending? Any of these?

Hi,

I am soon to go to Australia and trying to work out the best way to spend. I have a Virgin, Barclays and Nationwide Credit Card and ideally would like a travel credit card with one of these as it would be easier to manage via the app. Virgin CC currently have £670 outstanding, Barclays has £2800 and Nationwide has £0.

I've seen the Virgin Travel Credit Card which gives:

- no fees on overseas purchases
- 0% for 12 months on purchases / BT

Or the Nationwide Select Credit Card which gives:

- Commission-free purchases abroad
- 0% for 12 months on purchases / BT

So on the outset they seem the same? Am I missing anything?

Which should I go for or is there a significant better one?

Thank you
-

Have you considered Tandem I use it all the time abroad and you get 0.5% cashback. Also excellent exchange rates. Apply via the app.

So if i spend £1000 I will get £5? Better than nothing I guess.

Is there any difference between the Nationwide and Virgin offer above? Or any other ones's, the reviews on Tandem seem mixed.

Is either of those cards good for cash withdrawals from ATMs?

Be aware that most Aussie banks will charge a fee for cash withdrawals, except for their own customers.

Don't withdraw cash on a credit card. Home or abroad. It's not good practice. If you need cash get starling or similar.

  • I will advice you to use Virgin Travel credit. It’s worth it sir. 0% interest on purchases for 12months.

There's absolutely no reason not to use a travel credit card like Halifax Clarity or the Barclaycard travel card. The amount of interest can be minuscule and cash withdrawals on a travel card are unlikely to have much effect on the credit file.

Starling of course avoids interest, but when I used Starling at an Aussie ATM, the ATM charged a fee.

You literally just contradicted yourself! Lol.

You said "absolutely no reason" not to use a credit card for cash withdrawals.

...and then proceeded to list the reasons against doing it. Haha.

I think that you need to learn to read posts fully before commenting.

Vortigern didn't state that there was "absolutely no reason" not to use a credit card for cash withdrawals"
    What they stated was:
"There's absolutely no reason not to use a travel credit card like Halifax Clarity or the Barclaycard travel card"

Stating that using certain cards is fine is not the same as stating that using all cards is fine.
