Grants to reimburse students/graduates who started uni between '98 and '06.

Hi, not really sure what this is about, i just discovered it on Facebook and thought it might apply to me.

Has anyone else heard about it and whether it's a viable claim?? I'd be grateful if someone could shed some light on it!

Thanks!

  • It's a pressure group; their point is that students who started courses between the abolition of grants and their reinstatement were treated unfairly and should get some restitution.

Personally, I don't think there's a snowball in h*ll's chance of success but it will be interesting to see how many join, whether the petition is accepted for the Downing Street site and if so, how many signatures it gets.

Would be great to see the details and I'm sure there would be thousands of interested parties!!

Not much hope of Govt. reimbursing us, but worth a try!!!

  • are you also going to pay the increased fees etc? Stands about as much chance of me winning miss world (of course the rebate could go someway towards the sex change...).

  • I think I sort of see what is happening as jealousy.

If the funding these students were not getting at the time was not enough, then they should have spoke then.

The system has taken a step forward (some may disagree) and provides more funding to those that need it. I am happy that atleast some people are benefiting more than they would if the old system continued. Yes they may now have it better than you did but that doesn't make you any personally any worse off.

I have to agree with Celifein, and I started uni between '98 and '06. I've come out with a lot of debt, but the way I see it, I enjoyed uni, had fantastic opportunities while I was there, and the degree has definitely helped me into a better job than I would have had without it.

I dont think its fair when people can now go to uni and have their tution fees and maintenance loan paid for and they dont have to pay it back!

I am curently in my 3rd year - and will be in about £10,000 of debt when i leave

The system that supposedly works out how much help you will recieve assumes that your parents are paying for fees as they are over the threshold of recieving help.

I work p/time to help pay for my studies and will have to repay debt at the end. My parents do not pay fees and the loans company shouldnt just assume that they are! Whereas they can let others go to uni (for free!) - they could work p/time as i am and pay back their fees!

Everyone pays tuition fees and pays their loans back.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I believe the system does not assume anyones parents are paying thier fees - everyone is entitled to a loan for tuition fees if they want. The system does however assume your parents will make a contribution to living costs and this is reflected in the size of loans/grants.

Firstly, they do repay all their loans back. If your parents for whatever reason do not help you financially then tell your local education authority, there's procedures in place. The SLC doesn't assume anything, it up to you to fill in the forms and prove the necessary claims.
