FedEx problem

So I ordered 2 pairs of boots from America, 1 paid worth $200 and the other $160. The first pair worth $200 were shipped via DHL, no problems there, paid my £20 tax and sorted. The second pair, worth $160 was shipped with FedEx and had so many issues.
First I got a text with a link instructing me to pay £46 tax, which seems a hell of a lot considering my $200 pair only had £20 tax. The number was a standard mobile number which when googled had many people thinking it was a scam number however it was the same number that told me when my package was getting delivered. The link in the text also didn’t work so I couldn’t pay the tax anyway. The biggest problem was the state my package arrived in, the outer bag of the package was ripped open and the order letters that are usually inside were all gone. Luckily my boots were ok as they were in a shoe box but it was concerning that even that box had damage. The delivery driver also tried to hide the damage when handing over the parcel.
I have emailed fed ex twice and they simply just said to call to pay ignoring all the other things. Anything I can do? Thanks.

What do you want them to do, given that the product is fine? The packaging has done its job. It's protected the boots until you received them. What more are you expecting from them?

As to the tax, are you sure it's as straightforward as a percentage of the price you paid? Could it be that it's based on something different?

So you've had the delivery despite not paying the tax?
And the packaging was damaged but the goods intact?

If so what aspect of this is the problem?

$160 including shipping or was that extra?

I'd keep quiet, if you make waves they may notice you didn't pay the import duty properly, and that is going to be more than any compensation you have for a slightly tatty box. And, unless they are some sort of hyper rare collectors editions where "mint in box" is adding value then the box is only there to protect the contents, which it did rather well. (And if they were you'd have insurance on the shipment for sure.)
