Sainsburys Gold Travel Insurance

Hi, was wondering if anyone could possibly help with a query?

My daughter and I have a Sainsburys Gold annual travel policy. We have just returned from holiday. We were flying Beijing to Hong Kong with an onward flight to Da Nang in Vietnam. Whilst waiting for our connecting flight in Hong Kong on 12th August, the airport was closed down due to the protests. Our flight should have left at 6.15pm on 12 Aug, we got a flight the next day 13th at 3.40pm

I have just spoken to Sainsburys who said we could claim 2 x £35 (for the travel delay, in total the delay was about 21 hours) which I fine. But we had also pre-paid our hotel in Vietnam and Sainsburys have said we have to claim that back from the airline as we are not covered. I don`t really understand insurance but assumed that this would be covered under Travel Disruption Cover?

Please might anyone be able to advise us if this is correct or if we have to try and recoup the money from Cathay Pacific?

Thank you so much, sorry its so long winded.

What are the T+Cs in regards to travel disruption? Never assume, be sure as that's what your paying for.

We never could have imagined this happening, we felt we were covered for everything we might have needed.

We thought we would have been covered for our accommodation under this bit:
Section 11: Travel disruption cover 73.
    A. Cancellation and cutting short your trip is extended to include the the following cover:
    What IS covered:
    a. if you were not able to travel and use your booked accommodation;

We will pay you up to the amount shown in the Policy limits and excesses
table for the level of cover you have selected for:
    • Any irrecoverable unused travel and accommodation costs (including unused kennel or cattery fees) and other prepaid charges including airport parking, car hire, excursions and green fees where the appropriate Golf Cover premium has been paid which you have paid or are contracted to pay together with any reasonable additional travel expenses incurred.

    Thank you

The main ones have taken out excess one as we paid the waiver for nil excess, we are not claiming any other costs as we had lounge access.

    • Any costs incurred by you which are recoverable from the transport operator or for which you receive or are expected to receive compensation, damages, refund of tickets, meals, refreshments, accommodation, transfers, communication facilities or other assistance
    • Any costs incurred by you which are recoverable from the company providing the accommodation or for which you receive or are expected to receive compensation or reimbursement
    • Any accommodation costs, charges and expenses where the transport operator has
    offered reasonable alternative travel arrangements
    • Any costs which you would have expected to pay during your trip
    • Any claims arising directly or indirectly from circumstances known to you prior to the date this insurance is purchased by you or the time of booking any trip (whichever is the later) which could reasonably have been expected to give rise to cancellation or cutting short the trip
    • Claims arising directly or indirectly from strike or industrial action existing or declared publicly by the date this insurance is purchased by you
    • Scheduled flights not booked in the UK
    • Scheduled flights not booked through a bonded travel agent or direct with a scheduled airline
    • Costs which you can recover from elsewhere. For example, payments recoverable from your credit or debit card issuer

Looking at the last point it seems they are assuming you can get a refund from your credit card company! I must have my stupid head
on today as I did think we would be covered. I`m now thinking I have to contact Cathay Pacific to see what they say and then if no joy get in touch with my credit card provider? This is the first time ever I have needed to make any kind of claim...they don`t make it easy do they?

    Thanks again
