Short term home insurance

We are planning on moving house in the near future ( currently renting, buying our first home) but have not yet got a date for exchange/ completion and the contents insurance of our current property has come to an end. Does anyone have any recommendations on best way to get short term insurance? Is it better to buy with a short term insurer or buy full insurance and cancel. Baring in mind we don’t want too many credit checks before the house goes through.
