Buying shares

Hi there,

I want to buy some shares in some companies I’ve had my eye on.

I want to ask what is the best vehicle for buying shares?

We looking for long term shares.

  • If you don't have any investments (like investment trusts, ETFs or OEICs) at the moment, then an account with either

X-O - part of Jarvis Investment Management - https://www.x-o.co.uk/ - £5.95 per trade, no set-up fee or ongoing fee

    or iWeb - part of Lloyds/Halifax - https://www.iweb-sharedealing.co.uk/share-dealing-home.asp - £5 per trade, £25 set-up fee, no ongoing fee

are often recommended. In both cases, holding them inside their Stocks and Shares ISA means you won't pay income tax on dividends, or be subject to Capital Gains tax on long-term gains.

I don't know about iWeb as I've never used them, but x-o only offer a fairly basic service which lets you buy on the LSE.

If you are wanting to buy shares listed on an overseas exchange, for example on NASDAQ, then you'll need to make sure your platform offers that (and as someone with no experience suddenly looking to buy specific shares I'd say there was a fair likelihood that is exactly what you are wanting to do!)

You can trade foreign shares on iWeb.

iWeb is decent, it's simple to use, but it is no frills.

    1.5% plus exchange rate.

I've not actually bought foreign shares with iWeb yet, I'm using it specifically for UK purchases only.

Does one need to open a Stocks and Shares ISA if one is a low earner and only wishing to purchased a relatively small amount?

One doesn't need to open a S&S ISA but investments should be considered suitable only for the long term and who knows (a) what one's income might be in ten years time (or more) and (b) how much the investment will grow by, so operating within a S&S ISA environment seems the obvious route to follow for everyone (who has an annual allowance to spare) regardless - it's no overhead and is offered by all the main players.

Dealing in small amounts of individual shares is likely not to be cost effective.

If unwrapped (not in an ISA) you would need to keep detailed records of purchases, sales and dividends.

Buy funds not individual shares I’ll even recommend passive funds over individual shares and I’m an active investor.
