MS Word with Widesreen Monitor

Big step up to a WS Monitor, bur. MS Word documents are aligned to the left of the available screen space.
I have tried the suggested remedies of View / Zoom 116 and View / Web layout / Print layout to no avail/. Even if I can shift the working page to the centre, next time I open the application the page is aligned left again.
The only difference with my monitor is that it's a 16:10 - could that pose the problem?

I can't picture what you mean ... did you drag the Word window to the left of the monitor and so it's now using the left half of the monitor only? If yes, drag it (via the Windows title bar) to the middle-top of the monitor and it should now go full screen.

If you close Word whilst it is full screen it will remember it. (Windows remembers the last setting).

When the word application is open. When I used a 4:3 monitor, the page of text or say a new a new page would be visible exactly in the middle with an equal amount of grey to both the left and right. Now with my WS monitor the page aligns to the left with a large area of grey to it's right.

Which version of Office are you using?

I'm using 2003, and it behaves exactly the way you said it ought to.

Finally, assuming you are using Win10, I suggest putting the windows taskbar on the right of the screen. Click settings ... personalisation ... taskbar ... taskbar location on screen ... select Right.

That final point won't help with your stated issue, but it makes better use of the wide screen, particularly for word processing.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I use a 16:10 monitor with W10 and Office 2003, without the issue you're having.

Good point, but. I have always been happy with Office 2000 and as I have the licence key and use it rarely, see no reason to change it. Unless it is obvious that the later versions offer a lot more.
As for W7, I am in the throes of upgrading to W10 , and wouldn't have unless the withdrawal of security updates and patches ceased at the end of the year.
My PC although not a power machine, is i3, 8Mb, SSD and perfectly adequate.

Try making sure the document is set to "Single Page", not Print Layout.

then use Ctrl + the Mouse Wheel to zoom in

8Mb? I presume you mean 8GB (for RAM).

Will Office 2000 install OK on Windows 10?

Office 2000 obviously does most tasks OK, but it won't work with the XML file formats (DOCX, XLSX, etc.) without a converter.

You'll need to change versions if you move to 10. Happily for you, one of our members might find that he has a spare key for a compatible Office version.
