Tonik or Octopus?

I am currently with SSE and just on a standard tariff for my Gas and Elec paid quarterly.

Prices were fine for the first couple years but last year and this year they are creeping up so looking to move to a tariff.

Best SSE can offer me is £91 a month.

Tonik come in at £78 a month and Octopus at £79.

Of the 2 - anyone recommend 1 over the other?

Like anything, I have read so many reviews both good and bad that I am starting to doubt moving but I know it makes sense instead of over paying.

Never switched energy supplier before so bit nervous about it.

Thanks

What are the actual rates ?
Both figures you show are no more than estimates.

You're nearly there. Just check the annual cost based on your actual (not estimated) annual kWh usage with Citizens Advice and Which?

Ignore DD amounts, they're wonky. Try separate quotations for gas and electricity, not just dual fuel.

You may also wish to check their ratings.

How long have you been with them?

Just gotten a really good quote with them around what you stated, but doesn't seem to be a lot of info about them other than trustpilot reviews and apparently they have a really good app.

Try splitting your Gas & Elec suppliers - Search the comp sites for Elec only and then Gas only

My mantra is not to go with the absolute cheapest or newest supplier, in the last 12 months a number of the "New-kids-on-the-block" suppliers have failed leaving customers with a real mess to clear up

I've only just switched over. They responded very quickly to my questions and opening readings via their live chat out of office hours. Obviously can't say how they are dealing with any problems yet!

  • Octopus tried to increase my DD from £31.84 to £52.49 because they thought I would be using a lot more electricity than the figure given, which was my previous suppliers billed units. This was about 6 weeks after changing to them my balance at that time was £25 in credit bearing in mind that the first DD is taken at the start of the contract. Although you have the option to change the direct debit back you would need to be monitoring the account the whole time. They base their figures on a “typical medium household” They send you an email to inform you they are changing your direct debit. I am a retired widow living on my own. I have since left them for another supplier.

As everyone can see the email that you quote they dont base their figures on a !typical medium household", they are "based on historical meter readings". in my case the information they quoted was based on previous occupiers after I replied with that fact the monthly payment was kept the same.

If they dont do such reviews people have and will complain that they have ended up in debt that they cannot afford to pay.

"When you switched, your quote was based on your estimate of how much energy you use each year.

Every UK home has an official estimate, based on historical meter readings. We've now received this from your previous supplier, and it looks like you're using more energy than your initial estimate.

    Initial estimate
Electricity: 1,500 kWh per year costing £297.56

    Official estimate
Electricity: 2,237 kWh per year costing £409.32

That means you're using an average of £9.31 a month more than your initial estimate.
    Official estimate doesn't look right?
This can happen if there's big changes in how energy is used in your home. The best way to ensure it's accurate is to submit a meter reading, and let us know by replying to this email. We'll review it for you."

Our recommendationTo spread the cost of your energy use, we need to change your monthly payments to £35.97, starting with your August payment. If you'd like to suggest something else, or you don't think this is right, just reply to this email.
We'll continue to review your account regularly to check your Direct Debit is set to the right amount.
