Scrapping a uk registered car in another eu country (roi)

My vehicle is registered in the UK (Northern Ireland). I recently spent two weeks in the Republic of Ireland and the engine became damaged beyond repair. It will not get back on the road without a new engine, and it is not financially sensible to do so. The car is 400 miles away from my home, so it would be expensive to get it towed back simply for the purpose of scrapping it.

I have spoken to a garage in Cork who will have the car scrapped on my behalf.

My question is – if I have the car scrapped at an Irish ATF, and receive a certificate of destruction, will the UK authorities accepted this as having it properly disposed of? I know the ATFs have to meet EU standards, so I am hoping we are okay.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    From https://www.gov.uk/scrapped-and-written-off-vehicles
Scrap a vehicle that’s registered abroad
If you want to scrap a vehicle from another country in the UK, you must use an ATF.

You’ll get a ‘Certificate of Destruction’ to prove that the vehicle has been destroyed.

It’s your responsibility to tell the driving authority in the country where the vehicle is registered that it has been scrapped.

So I see no reason why the opposite should not apply
  • thank you

That was my logic also - but always good to check

(better get this done before 31 Oct!)

Just write to DVLA, and explain the situation. There's no need to provide any paperwork, if you break a car yourself, so no need if it's scrapped abroad.

Don't you need a certificate for the safe disposal of all the fluids?

The DVSA are really keen to get one, but you're under no legal obligation to provide it.

No more than I do for changing the oil. I put it all in a 20l drum which goes to a mate with an oil-burning workshop heater.

I dropped the fuel tank from one of the fleet a little while ago - the petrol that came out went into one of the others.

Since the ROI insist on people using an ATF then you will get a certificate anyway..

    From ROI citizens advice
    Information
An end-of-life vehicle (or ELV) is a car or light commercial vehicle with a maximum mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes which is to be disposed of by the registered owner (in other words, a car or van which is to be scrapped). Owners of intact end-of-life cars and vans must deposit such vehicles at an appropriately permitted or licensed authorised treatment facility (ATF). An authorised treatment facility may not charge for accepting an end-of-life vehicle. When one of these vehicles is deposited at an authorised treatment facility, the owner will receive a certificate of destruction.

Why not transfer the ownership to the garage on the DVLA site and let then get on with the rest ?

Because you'd simply be notifying DVLA of an export, not the new keeper - since the new keeper isn't in the country.

Tangential, but this thread Reminds me of the scores of cars slowly rotting away at Swansea docks where various Irish people have abandoned them before catching the ferry to Corcaigh.

There have been no ferries since 2011 but the cars are still there, slowly disintegrating.
