Starting a new job but may need to go on sick leave for an operation?

So basic background is that I have been offered a really good job and I start the 11th September and I’m so excited. I’m a bit worried though because I have been suffering with bad abdominal pain which doctors are suspecting gallstones. I am getting a scan within two weeks and I’m just worried that if they do fine gallstones then they will remove the gallbladder. Which is completely fine I would prefer that so I don’t suffer with pain anymore but with me starting a new job I’m anxious that they could be funny about the situation. It is with a local city council so I’m hoping they would be very reasonable but it’s more because I would just be starting. Could I get sacked for taking the time off?

Within the first two years of starting a job they can get rid of you for any reason apart from the normal exclusions. I would get intouch if I were you and inform them of what may happen that way everyone is up to date .
Good luck with your new job :0)0 -
Removal of the gallbladder is normally a last resort, not the first they would look at doing. Unless you have reason to expect the operation is the route they will take I wouldn't worry about it until after the scan. You can't change what will happen, but will at least have the facts available after the scan.0

I had my gallbladder out a couple of months ago which went very well. It was two weeks recovery off work and then I was back to normal.
Just be open and up front with your new employer. It will be far better to be off for two weeks with an operation as opposed to taking frequent random sick days off work due to crippling pain.
Sometimes you don’t have a choice but to have a operation and hopefully your new employer will be unstanding. Be warned though you probably won’t be eligible for any company sick pay if the operation is quite soon.0 -
Mrs Lincroft had gall bladder removed a few months ago, usually an outpatient op, no overnight stay. Depending on job may not be need for much recovery time.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

They can’t sack you for being sick but they don’t have to pay you.0

Oh yes they can if the employer believes an employee's sick leave is excessive. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
Id be more concerned as to why they are removing your gall bladder for abdominal pain.
I had abdominal pain and had my gall bladder removed 18 months ago. It has made no difference to my pain and on getting an appointment with another specialist he told me that gall bladder pain is felt under the rib cage and in the upper back not the abdomen.
He told me that if the pain is in the abdomen it cannot be the gall bladder so I had mine removed for nothing.0 -

In that case you’ll be fine and they’ll take it in their stride. At least that would always have been the case in my experience of the public sector.
Don’t tell them about health maybes and perhapses before you start. Just be open about things as and when they happen from now on.0 -
Did you declare it when you filled in the occupational health form? Thry might have an issue if there was a question about stomach issues and you answered none.0
