I have been trying to find information on this but I am not sure I even know what I am searching for. So I have recently won £20 on the People's Postcode Lottery and and I found out that to get my money I need to call or email and given them
Full Name
Full Address
Account Number
Sort Code
and maybe even a picture of my driving licence to prove all of my details.
I told them on the phone call there is no way I would hand that over and they told me I could email it as that is safe.
I have come to terms with giving up that £20 and I cancelled the money for next months draw. But it made me think is there a way to get a secondary / spoof / alternate account number that can be used to pay money in but not used for direct debit / credit.
I asked Barclays but the people on secure chat just advised me to never hand over my details and could not really get past just repeating that.

A savings account with sort code and account number can't pay direct debits. Move the cash elsewhere as soon as it's credited.0

I wonder why people now regard sort code and account numbers as a state secret when they've been printed on cheques for decades.
Is fraudsters establishing front companies to act as direct debit originators a common fraud vector? It's not one I hear of.0 -
On it's own I do think think I would find it as bad as handing over all that information in one email or phone call when I have no idea what security measures they have in place to protect it.
Name, address, DOB and bank details what else would they need for Identity theft? My thinking is if you could get an additional account number that can't be used for things like that it would flag up the attempts as being fraudulent.0 -
Like many others on this forum I have several bank accounts. Some are for the hgher rates of interest, either on the current accounts or regular savers. One or two others have recently been opened purely for the incentives. 2 of these accounts do not require direct debits to be set up, just a minimum amount of cash to be deposited each month. One account I just pay the cash through each month (then back to my "main" account) but keep a few pounds in there to keep it open to use as a donor account in case there is a good switching offer. The other account I have to keep for a year to gain an extra bonus so I again pay the cash in and out to satisfy the terms and use this as my personal spends account. So either of these accounts details I would be happy to give to the postcode lottery people (as long as I could verify they were genuine) as any unusual activity would show up very quickly. I do however regularly check my accounts so even on the household bills account which has several direct debits running I would pick up any anomalies.
I have never entered the postcode lottery so not sure how you pay. I know for the Euromillions that some people have an account set up and pay that way so I would have thought the details would already be held. Are you sure the win is genuine and it is not just a scam?0 -
how do you pay for your lottery subscription if it is by direct debit then they will pay the prize money into the same account they take your direct debit from
if you pay in another way for example by cheque you could ask them to send you the prize money by cheque0 -
How do you pay into the Lottery? What did the terms and conditions say about receiving prize money when you paid into it?I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?0

.
Or the millions of companies that show their full bank details at the bottom of every invoice they send out (just as we do at work).
There is little you can do with someone else's sort code and account number other than give them money.0
