Car Insurance Threatening to cancel my insurance for address details being wrong

Hi,

My car insurance (OneCall Insurance) is threatening to cancel my insurance tomorrow if i don't get my V5 and driving licence changed to my current address.

I told them 3 months ago that i had split from wife and gave my new address - and sent council tax bill and DVLA letter , payslip in my new address and driving licence and V5 in old address.

I've now been given 7 days to get the new address on V5 and licence? or they will cancel the insurance?

can they do this? Ive told them everything and yet they are still threatening me - but STILL taking the payments each month!?

Sounds legit. Why haven't you changed it to your current address?

You don't have to live at the address on the V5 or licence, only be contactable there, so I don't think they can do that, read the T&Cs carefully. Now if you told them the car is kept at the old address and it is actually at the new one, then there would be a problem.


Still, there doesn't seem any reason not to change them, unless it is temporary accommodation, it is free and probably do-able on-line.

Can they do it? It seems so. It's probably in their terms and conditions that you signed to say you read and agreed to conform to.

Even if they can't insist on it, what's the difficulty? With the threat of cancelled insurance looming, just get the V5 and licence updated. The cost of cancelled insurance will be eye-watering.

So why not change the V5C and licence? It's quick, easy, and free.

My suggestion would be for you to send off your documents (or do it online if possible) as soon as possible and if you don't get them updated and forwarded to your insurers within 6 days, call them up and you cancel your policy.
As already mentioned by others, if they cancel your policy then this has to be declared (and as far as I know, there is no maximum time that it has to be declared for) so you would end up paying higher premiums and possibly having fewer insurers willing to provide cover.

If you cancel the policy, you will probably lose out financially due to the fees and loss of premium but I'm sure this loss will be far less then having to declare a cancelled policy for the next X years.

Hi Thanks everyone,

the only reason i didnt change the address is because its only a temporary address 6 months at most - so i didnt want to have to change them again when i move again.

I did explain all this - i have changed it with the dvla so they know where i am - just not the v5 or sent my licence in! - im going to send it now but its the fact theyve given me 7 days to do this or cancel my insurance - id like to see them do that in 7 days - it takes up to 6 weeks for v5!!

<shrug> So do it in 6mo. It's not a big deal.

Don't know about V5, but whenever I've changed my licence address it's come back pretty much by return of post.

When you move you need to change your licence and the V5c. They are not linked. Why so many people think they are I don't know.
