Re-felting apex roof

Options
Hi,
I am trying to find out if it is possible to have one side of my roof refelted?? There is a large hole in the currently brittle old-style felt on one side of the house and a few smaller tears on the other side.

I've been quoted £2850 (ex. VAT) by a roofer for a complete replacement of entire roof felt. He says that 1) it is more economical to get the whole roof done as opposed to one side (as the other side will likely deteriorate quickly) and 2) tiles will need to be removed and replaced on both sides, even if only one side is refelted.

It is a three-bedroom end of terrace house, built circa 1980's and has never been refelted before.

If anyone could advise if this is a reasonable quote and if it is, in fact, the case that tiles from both sides of the roof need to be removed, that would be a massive help!!

Thank you in advance ::j

    We don't know what your roof looks like to know if it's a fair price. Any help?

    I would go for something better than felt, to be honest. It will cost more but be more reliable and have much greater longevity.

    We haven't felted a roof in years. Times change :o

    I assume vritson is referring to the 'felt' beneath roof tiles as they refer to tiles having to be removed on both sides. I assume the felt would be laid over the ridge which is why tiles on both sides of the roof would need to be removed.
    I'm inclined to agree with the roofer that it will be more cost effective in the long run to get all the felt replaced in one go. As for cost it's impossible to say without knowing the roof area, access etc.
  • Your thoughts have been very helpful.

    Yes, it's the felt under the roof tiles we are having replaced. I think we will go ahead with this quote now that I know both sides of the roof will need to be removed in either case.

    Can't quite afford to go beyond standard felt but will bear this in mind for the future. The old felt is tough and brittle, so hopefully, the newer breathable membrane will be a step up.

    So you're re-roofing the whole thing and using breather membrane. That's a pretty average sounding price and that's what he should be doing.

    Re-felting means something else to me. I presumed you had an area of flat roof.
