Contract coming to an end

The EON Go Online 1 Year v16 contract that I'm on is coming to an end on 3rd of September and I'm looking to switch to a different supplier but was wondering can I switch now without any exit fees?

Also, I believe the switch normally takes 2-3 weeks which my current contract will have ended, will I be paying EON the new tariff price while the switch happens?

Yes, you're within 49 days. I believe the old rates may continue until the switch is completed.

    Thank you so much.

Can I ask if this appliues to all suppliers, please?

We are just coming to the end of a 2 year deal with Ovo and everything on offer today seems more expensive than we currently pay. Perhaps we could hold fire and hope a lower priced tariff comes along later, if we can remain on our current tariff until then?

Your existing supplier will only hold the rate if you have started a switch away -unfortunately it isn't open ended !!

    Thanks for that.

It didn't sound right to me either. You have to be so careful with some of the advice posted on this forum don't you?
Even some posters who have been here for years are posting misleading advice :(

Looks like the advice from Gerry1 was a load of bunkum :(
What was 'bunkum'? You won't be charged exit fees if you switch within the 49 days window. That's recently been confirmed by Ofgem (see the last orange box on Page 5.)

I then said "I believe the old rates may continue until the switch is completed". You will note that I never said this was definite, merely a possibility, nor did I ever say it was open ended which would obviously be nonsense.

Ofgem licence condition SLC23.6 may mean that if you've given notice within the switching window that you're moving to a new supplier, you don't have to pay the higher rates in the following 17-21 days until the switch is completed. However, it's hard to be certain unless you're a legal eagle, which I'm not and have never claimed to be.

If you just insult people who take the time to help newbies, I fear you may not get many responses in future...

Hello Casterina and happy to confirm Gerry1's advice. As your current tariff ends on 3 September 19, you can switch supplier now without picking up exit fees.

We use a Price Protection window. This is open 49 calendar days before a fixed tariff ends until 20 working days after. Provided the new supplier is in touch during this time, we'll keep you on the cheaper prices whilst the switch goes through and waive all exit fees.

Sorry to lose you Casterina and hope this is useful.

Thank you for your information, my account is in credit so do I automatically get a refund of the remaining credit when my account closes or do I need to ring up and ask?

Thanks for coming back to me Casterina.

With a change of supplier, the new company drives the switch. They'll send us their opening meter readings and we'll use the same ones to close your account and issue our final bill. If you've registered with our website for paperless billing, we'll put the final bill online and send you an email to let you know it's there. If not, we'll send it by post.

All remaining credit on the final bill will be refunded. If there's a live Direct Debit, we'll send the refund back to your bank. If not, we'll send a cheque. Either way, we look to sort refunds within 10 working days of the final bill. It's a bit quicker sending it back to a bank.

Should there be anything left to pay, we'll collect this as a one-off Direct Debit. The date we'll do this will be shown on the final bill. With no Direct Debit, there are various ways to pay including online through our website/mobile app or over the phone.

Hope this explains Casterina. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.
