If you can be at home one collection day just pop out and have a nice chat to the workers, maybe offer a nice cold drink or as artful said some tea and biscuits and they'll sort you out. This might not be the official way to deal with it but in my experience they go out of their way to help people who are nice to them. Maybe one week your bin is a bit too full but they'll take it anyway, or maybe you've accidentally put some glass in with the plastic and instead of leaving the lot they'll sort it for you and take it all.

They do a tough job with very little thanks and everyone quick to complain and post on local groups insulting them for simple mistakes that somebody being nice and understanding is highly appreciated.

Another vote for pop out and speak to them.

When I moved into this house I was putting my bins out according to the appropriate bin colour and day on the council website. Not collected. Rang the council, turned out I didn’t have a “this person has paid her council tax so add this bin to your round please bin men” sticker on it. When it came through the post, I stuck it on, right bin out on right day, still not collected.

As it happened I was up when the bin men were collecting the next week (they come really early here), so I dashed out and asked one of them what I was doing wrong. He said they don’t take bins that are facing the wrong way round - you have to leave the handle facing the roadside so they can scoop them up super quick. No time to correct people’s mistakes he said.

    Problem solved 🙂
Shout out to people who don't know what the opposite of in is.
