Learner car insurance mileage - Will they assume we are fronting?

I'm just getting insurance quotes for my partner who is a learner with her own car. I'm listed as a named driver (which brings the cost down considerably) but she is the main driver. If I put the mileage down as 6,000 a year then the quote she gets is just over £912

The thing is, I always play around with the settings and if I increase the mileage to "20,000+" weirdly the insurance cost comes down to £681.76 from £912 which doesn't make ANY sense at all  I can only assume that they know some people put less miles in the hopes of getting it cheaper when they actually do a lot more, so it's kind of a reward for being honest or something (had a Google search and Which? posted something about it earlier this year so seems to be quite common)

That's quite a big saving and well worth it, and since the mileage is "up-to" anything under this is fine. However, there's that thought in the back of my head... "What learner is possibly going to be doing more than 12,000 miles a year, nevermind 20,000?"

Now if the car was hers but I insured it in my name with her as a named driver, its known as fronting and illegal. BUT the car is hers, its insured in her name with me as a named driver but it apparently does over 20K a year... Are they likely to think that she is fronting for me? (despite the fact that I have my own car and I could insure hers fully comp for under £200)

Now obviously I don't mind putting an annual mileage of 6K, but a saving of nearly £235? You'd have to be insane to pass that up these days! Anyone else had any similar issues like this? Probably not is my guess :rotfl:

I would go with the cheapest quote.
As you say, you aren't fronting so no problem there.
Your partner might get a job with a 100 mile commute when they pass.

As long as the factor in the insurance is likely to go up when she passes that won't be a problem.

If you put 20,000 you are commiting fraud and the insurance company could refuse to pay out if there was a serious accident costing them thousands.
If there is no accident, no one is likely to find out, do you want to risk it?
Do you not understand what it means, when you do not tell the truth?
The milage is recorded, every time the car has a MOT.

At what point when you fail to do 20,000 miles is it fraud?

Yes and not just likely and not by a small amount. It can easily double.

Someone doing only 6000 miles a year has less road experience than someone doing 20,000. Statistics will show the driver with less er mileage is more likely to have a claim.

Insurance quotes are all based on statistics

Its fraud when you knowingly write incorrect information on your insurance quote.

The mileage you enter into your insurance is an UPTO mileage, you don't have to use all / any of them miles at all if you don't want to (I have just confirmed this with my own insurance company)

    Info:
Simon: Good afternoon. My name is Simon, how can I help you today?
Mark: Hello, I was just wondering, if I declare on my insurance that I drove 20,000 miles but I actually drive less than this, does it invalidate my policy?
Simon: Can I ask Mark how many miles under this are we talking? If it's a lot less it might be cheaper to declare less
Mark: The car would only be driven 6,000 to 9,000 miles a year so substantially less
Simon: Thank you for that, you are okay to do as many miles under as you like. You could not drive at all, drive it 1 mile or drive it 20000 miles. I do have to warn you though, overstating your mileage can increase your premium
Mark: It's actually cheaper if I get a quote for 20,000 miles than if I get one for 6,000
Simon: Yes that is perfectly fine, but if you find yourself needing more miles justcome back to us and we can sort it for you
    Simon: *just come.
    Mark: OK, thanks
Info: The chat transcript will be sent to: EMAIL REMOVED at the end of your chat.
Simon: You are very welcome, thank you for chatting Mark, take care and goodbye for now."

So realistically, I can put any amount of miles I want but (apparently) I will end up paying more for something I won't use

So how do you predict your exact mileage every year?

So based on your logic, if i put down 12,000 a year, and 30 days in to it ive only done 800 miles, should i pop out and drive a random 200 so i'm on target :rotfl:
