Travel Insurance - Return Flight Cancelled insurance possible?

Looking for travel insurance but my travel companion recently had an issue and wants us to be covered.
1. Sat waiting for flight to New York at Gatwick, Norweigan cancel in bound flight.
2. After checking into hotel she calls Norweigan who offer a return flight via Oslo or a refund.
3. The return flight isn't convenient so she takes the refund and books a flight back with BA at a much higher cost.
Norweigan and travel insurance say the cost of the BA flight is nothing to do with them.
Now we're off to USA in December and want to be covered to prevent this and I can't find any policies that would? Is it possible?
Thanks
Keith

She shouldn't have accepted a refund only for the cancelled flight, but also extra for the inconvenience Especially from EU owned carrier, there are strict rules.0

Indeed, at the time she and me at the end of the phone whilst she worried about getting back neither of us had any idea.
Norweigans view was that accepting the refund waived their responsibility, I believe if the ticket still stood and she booked the replacement flight they'd have been liable.0 -

She was waiting to fly to New York and got a message that her return flight to London was cancelled.
As she was literally about to board, she flew out and then called Norwegian who offered her a flight back via Oslo or a flight much later in the week - She'd been due to return on Easter Monday and all Norwegian direct flights were full.0 -
Travel insurance policies often state they only cover delays of outbound flight. not inbound. You need to check the terms of the policy.
You don't say how long ago your travel companion was affected but you can claim for up to 6 years in England,
For compensation have a look at https://www.caa.co.uk/Passengers/Resolving-travel-problems/Delays-cancellations/Cancellations/Short-haul-cancellations/

Hi, yes that's the issue finding one which doesn't just cover outbound. I think the issue actually is the carrier would be responsible in most cases... if you don't accept a refund!
It was only Easter, she's had the standard compensation and ticket refund but due to demand is still out of pocket by £400.0
