Can you say what these areas are like in Hull?

I like the marina/victoria dock area the most from what I have seen/been told but can't see much available there for my price at the moment.

I am itching to move from where I am so wondering whether to compromise and get moved and keep an eye out once I am in hull for places in that area.

I want to live within walking distance to the center but out just enough to be away from the maddening crowd of a weekend.

I take it you don't live in Hull now? Sounds like your best bet is to book a long weekend in an AirBnB or PremierInn, and spend some time personally investigating the areas.

I don’t live in Hull, its a cess pit, but know it well having worked there and friends who do live there, Vicky dock/marina is not far enough away from the centre to be away from the crowd on a weekend, marina is right in the centre, what’s your reason for wanting to move to hull? Are you going to be working there?

    Why Hull?
Beverley's not far and has a better name, it's more "genteel".
Genteel tends to mean "safer" :)

I wouldn't live in Hull for this reason alone. I like choices to shop around:

  • I don't know all areas of Hull as I was only a student there, but I would say avoid anywhere round Newland Avenue or Beverley Road as these are the student areas (unless you like that sort of thing).

Princes Avenue is nice, albeit possibly not the safest of areas, but loads of really great independent restaurants and cafes.

Unless things have changed in the last 5 years or so since I lived there, being in walking distance from the centre isn't necessary as busses are decent and very cheap if you don't drive.

Cottingham is nice, but further away.

Where are you living at the moment?

Knowing where you live now might make it easier to establish if you would like Hull or not

What are your reasons for choosing Hull?

I assume you are looking to rent, whats your budget, that may be far more of a factor in where you live if prices in other areas or even your preferred area are higher than your budget

  • I would disagree with the above and say that Victoria dock is a very walkable distance, but far enough away- it's a residential area, so you won't find anything more than local pubs, etc there.

Marina/ Humber street area is a commercial area, but very different to other cities. Hull has a very quiet evening/ night culture, and although you'll find that bars and clubs get business on Friday and Saturday nights, most places are very quiet- the high street is dead at 6pm. The exception to this is Humber street sesh/ freedom festival, for which those areas are absolutely packed and pedestrianised.

What is it you're hoping for from living in Hull? How old are you? Are you after regular meals out, drinking, etc? Will you be working in the city centre? As others have pointed out, public transport is actually surprisingly good in Hull, so somewhere else may be a better match for you.

With regards to most replies so far, I know I like hull. I been out there a couple times and is just what I am after so that is not the issue. I don't care that most people hate it :). They probably hate it for the very reasons I like it.

I'm specifically looking for a smaller non 'trendy' city which just bobs along nicely without all the fanfare of bigger cities :). I have been living in larger cities what people might call 'hip' for close to the last 2 decades which people flock to and am sick of that kind of vibe.

I have done my research on that front over the past 6 months or so having been to 7 or so towns and cities of varying sizes I have picked hull as my favourite.

It seems responses were assuming I was asking what is on offer there, but I know I like it already; having stayed overnight twice on the weekend and walked around much of the center I feel I have a good idea about seeing it at its worst.

I am just interested in info of individual residential areas as to how quiet/peaceful they are whilst still being within the distance I want (walking distance to town on a weekend) and the links I showed in OP were ones I had shortlisted as potential flats I would like to rent so was interested in what people had to say on the areas.

Looking on google maps street view vic docks/marina looks sweet; the person who said it would still be loud and raucous I think is exaggerating as clarabella said.

It is over the main road from the bar district and seems well enough tucked away from the main central bar strip whilst being a 'normal' residential area up/down houses where families would live. Quite funny to see a suburban type of little estate plonked right between the main nightlife and the waterfront slap bang in the center.

I can't say anything of crime from the pictures mind you and I read some ex Hullensian bemoaning how they lost over £3k to thieves on multiple occasions living there and were rejoicing having left but they seemed particularly bitter; which is understandable if that happened to them :) but I haven't heard any other accounts like that on my reading thusfar though of course keeping my eyes/mind open for input in that regard.

Anyway the other areas seem more easy to find a place from my current research and the links in OP are all more inland bar one I think which is on the docks.

Where do you live now? Is Hull a long way from you? What kind of budget do you have?
I lived about 25 miles away from Hull, and that was close enough. Really. I wouldn’t live in Cottingham either, but I’d certainly live in Beverley. There are a lot of places in that area that are decent, but the price goes up accordingly.
As I suspected, somebody has been adding soil to my garden. The plot thickens...
