VAT reclaim

I purchased a brand new car from a dealer and advised the dealer I intend to ship the car abroad.
I shipped my car abroad after 2 months and asked the car dealer for my VAT back which I was told I am entitled to.
The dealer said they do not get involved in returning VAT and advised me to go to HMRC.
HMRC said I needed to apply for VAT before I purchased the car therefore they cannot help me with a refund of £5,000+.
I have exhausted the car company complains procedure and now I'm at a standstill.
What can I do to recover back my VAT I paid on my car?

If this was a personal purchase, and you are still a UK resident I don’t think you can claim VAT back.
If you were eligible for a refund, then it sounds like you failed to fill in the relevant documentation to accompany the export, if that is the case you have blown it I’m afraid.0
