UPDATE: managed to speak to Metrolink today. Very helpful as it happens. Apparently I'd tapped in and out by mistake so extra journeys were charged for. The daily max of £4.80 + £4.60 x 2 which comes to £14. Still don't really understand but it was my fault and they have refunded me the extra £9.20. Sounds like there is a call centre just dealing with overpayments and refunds. Say "we are all learning".

You are making the rather courageous assumption that there isn't a fault with Metrolink's shiny new contactless ticketing scheme.
So it doesn't appear to have been a system error!

He said it was my fault and I have no way of proving otherwise.

Well, Metrolink's customer services blamed the customer. Which isn't the same as saying there wasn't a "system error".
