Universal Credit is the only means tested benefit available now because all areas are now a full UC area. Claiming this will depend on household income, savings and capital.

To qualify for SMI through UC you have to wait for 9 consecutive UC payments without any earned income. See link.

Lots of information on UC here https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/scotland/benefits/universal-credit/

SMI is an interest free loan from the government who place a charge on your property and loan has to be repaid when property is sold.

Mum’s ESA and PIP will continue.

Note however - if mum is in hospital for more than 28 days you must tell PIP as payment will stop after 28 days. When she is discharged simply tell DWp and payment will resume. Days of admission and discharge do not count as days in hospital. If there are less than 28 days between stays in hospital the stays are linked and added together. After 28 days out of hospital the count starts again.

ESA is not affected by stays in hospital.

Various benefit calculators you can use https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/scotland/benefits/benefits-introduction/what-benefits-can-i-get/
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Are you sure of this? Does she not qualify for support in her own home?

Or is she eligible for a council supported place in a care home?

I thought of this Mam is completely compos mentis and is only 59 years old I dont want her in a home ......
she will need 24 hour care at first but hopefully I will get some help from the council at first

Luckily my career is such that I can pick it up again in the future .....

Did not know the 28 day rule for PIP she is closing in on that now after having a whipple procedure I will bear that in mind..... thanks for the heads up ......
