Tablets for dishwashers

We have a half sized slimline dishwasher which is all our kitchen has space for.

Please settle a domestic debate. Should I cut a normal size dishwasher tablet in two and only use half of it for each wash?

My O.H. declares I am taking stinginess too far but surely a whole one isn't needed for what is effectively a wash of half a normal size?

  • That sounds like a really sensible idea. I would try using half a dishwasher tab and see if you are pleased with the results. Maybe use a full tab if you have baked on food on casserole dishes etc.

I have a full size dishwasher and only use half a tablet (the basic supermarket ones) but our water is extremely soft.

Give it a go, if the dishes are clean it's a waste to use a full tablet!

I had a slimline dishwasher and used a full tablet, maybe try half and see what the results are
and don't forget slimlines are only a few setting off a big dishwasher so half a tablet may not be enough ifyswim

Full size dishwashers usually have a capacity of 12 to 16 place settings, while a slimline might only have 10. Compact dishwashers tend to have a 4 to 6 place setting capacity.

Perhaps worth going back to separate powder and rinse aid?

I use a full tablet in our slimline dishwasher, but that may be because it never actually occurred to me to cut the tablet in half! :rotfl: As someone else said, though, not sure it would be worth the faff for me...

If you are concerned about cost, I think Which? rate one of the budget supermarkets own brand dishwasher tabs as a Best Buy, but I can’t remember which one. Perhaps see if your local library has a copy of Which?, so you can look it up?

Just as with a washing machine it boils down to the hardness of your water. That also affects the setting you use for the salt.
Personally I think life is too short........(but of course you don't need to buy the dearest tablets!)
Maybe look at Aldi or Lidl's products

I've used the Lidl ones, but found they left a sort of cloudy film. I'm in very hard water area
I changed to Finish when they were on a good offer and have no problems with them

I use the all in ones, with rise aid & salt

Just a little tip that you might already know but I didn't until I read it on this forum. If you break it, in the packaging, using the edge of the work top to snap it in half it's a much easier and cleaner operation ;)

I'm even more stingy - don't use them at all.

Hot water by itself is good enough.
