Red hiking socks - no self-respecting walker would be without.
Some relaxing bath soak - for the end of the day.
    Ordnance survey maps
Book of local circular walks (the local bookshop might have some)
    A compass
Map cover (sometimes given free with Country Walking Magazine)
    Subscription to Country Walking Magazine
    A water bottle
    A stainless steel flask

How about a boot bag? Or even a carboot liner for muddy boots.
Mossie repellent (well. you never know)
packamack (handy for when you have gone out without your coat)
  • Ok so far I have the following:

    Folded map case £4.99
    Emergency Phone charger £4.99
    Walking Britain book £3.99
    Hand Warmers 99p
Kendal Mint cake (2 bars) £1.30
    Energy Sweets (2 packs) 94p
    Folding cutlery (2 packs) £2.00
    Muscle soak bath salts 95p
    Hand clean gel 49p
Credit card 10 in one multi tool £3

    Total £24.60

I am very pleased with it, just need to get some walking socks and something to put it all in, I have seen a lightweight rucksack which folds into a pocket in poundland has anyone tried to use one for a holder? was thinking I could line it with cardboard maybe and leave it open with things sticking out?
  • Just browsing and bumping up this old thread. Great ideas. I am a walker and would love a walkers hamper - think I will make one for my friend for Christmas.

I have a 50p plastic washing up brush, which lives in the car - it is for cleaning the soles of my boots out after a walk. No self respecting rambler should be without it.

If you budget couold stretch what about ramblers membership. Or check out for local walking groups in your area - and put their details in the hamper.

  • PS - what about navigation and map reading skills - essential for any walker. These can be found on the net and then printed - onto nice paper - and made into book.
