    Hi lincroft1710

An old coworker of mine works within the department in question and has only nice things to say.

So I'm hoping that it's going to be steady for a little while :)

    (impressed with 35 years though!)

I realised that after about 20 or so years, I had few transferable skills and nothing around that actually offered any really better money or
security or pension. So just a matter of keeping one's head down, not make too many waves and waiting till I could retire with max pension possible.

But good fortune smiled upon me and instead of having to wait until I had 40 yrs service, political machinations dictated a surplus of staff, so i took voluntary early retirement.

I was talking to a former colleague a few weeks ago. He currently has 41 yrs service, all in the same department!

What a completely misleading and wrong statement. I worked my way up to Jobcentre manager for DWP and had nothing but respect for the majority of staff and claimants. Of course, there are always some bad apples; usually someone who has worked for the department for a long time, refused to change with a changing benefit system and then claim everyone is "bullying" them when called on their poor attitude and performance.

In one Jobcentre I worked in, the rest of my staff were so fed up with one particular person who was rude, incompetent and claimed they were a victim every time a manager tried to tackle them, Eventually they quit as they realised I wasn't going to be intimidated by them.

Civil Service is a brilliant place to work and have a career, and gave me experiences that have proved invaluable in getting promoted to a very senior public sector role.

Hi. Apologies for late reply. Nothing misleading I am afraid. The claimants are bullied and so are the staff. Hence the bulling culture throughout opinion.

It is important to understand that because of the size of the network, some offices were different to others. Some had it like a holiday camp, postal signers and a low register etc.

I have a voice and I will use it. I worked at the Employment Service and Social Security offices under a Labour Government and a Conservative Government and I know what went on.

What you may find as the time limit for the expiration of the reserve list approaches ( and possibly people leave/get promoted etc) that you get a job offer.
Dont leave your current job until then (or the list expires).
I have been a Civil Servant for 31 years (same Department) and have never regretted joining.
I make the job work for me, not me work for the job.
    Good luck !

In my HR confirmation that I have been added to the reserve list it's noted as 12 months.

I've not told my work that I'm even looking.

The writing is on the wall in regards to my current role but the hammer is not going to fall for a while yet (the contract is currently being renegotiated and I am 100 per cent sure that as soon as its a done deal they are going to elbow me out the door and strong-arm the 3rd suppler that i am the liaison for into accepting the changes - if this sounds familiar I had a thread about being suspended last time they tried to do the same thing - https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5895147

Once I'm out I will be considering telling the 3rd party whats going on.

I'm casually looking for other roles but I would rather be a little picky as i have time to play with.

I was on the reserve list for 5 months- I was offered a job about 2.5 weeks before it would have expired (6 months here) this was for an AO job with HMRC. I don’t think that’s a standard email you received- certainly nothing like mine!

Still not heard, so I have a futher question :)

An almost identical role has shown up on CS jobs but for another branch of government.I take it my reserve status is not 'transferable'

If not and I apply does it show on my portal? My preference is for job one but two increases my odds.

(I was happy to sit back and wait but my role became more shaky today as vital aspects to doing my job were withdrawn meaning I expect that the things are being finalised regards the new contract)

Congratulations! If it’s where I work (HQ in Filton), then the best advice I can give is to fill out and submit/return forms ASAP. There are also fortnightly Induction Weeks, so you may not start as soon as your checks are done.

One final thing. If it’s where I work, parking is a nightmare. Use the adjacent train station.
  • Well done, I remember your previous thread. I hope this position goes a lot better for you. Well done for seeing it through.
