The problem with mattresses is everyone is different and 2 people can find the same mattress "the best night's sleep ever" or "mattress from hell".

Personally I cannot sleep on anything other than a rock hard mattress. When I visit my mum I sleep on the floor. But I wouldn't say my Mum's is faulty or unfit, just that it's not for me, and I'm sure an independent report would show it was fine.

Hi all. Would be most grateful for any opinions or advice on a few issues surrounding a new mattress.

The wife and I are looking at getting a new bed. We're of the opinion that a bed is something you shouldn't scrimp on in terms of how much you spend, so we're looking at the "better" types of mattress.

A bit of pre-shopping research suggested the two best types are pocket sprung mattresses and memory foam mattresses. In the shop, the ones that caught our eye and that we found most comfortable were a hybrid of the two i.e. mainly pocket sprung, but with a top layer of memory foam.

We've seen one that we want and I was going to phone back tomorrow and order it. However, since then I've read a few less than favourable things online about pocket sprung mattress. A fair few reports say that they make you sweat a lot more at night. Also, a few people have said that sex in them is much harder work because of the lack of springs!!!

So I wondered if anyone had any personal experience of memory foam mattresses and what your thoughts were? Would you reccommend them?

Also, I was a little unclear on whether the sweating and lack of bounce issues applied to the hybrid mattresses like I've been looking at - or whether they only apply to the pure memory foam ones?

    Thanks in advance

Pocket sprung do not make you sweat . Memory foam can be warmer .
Its the quality and size/ number of springs that count .

Are the better type ,or do you mean higher priced better than others .
For some they are for others they are not see OP.

Start with a standard £100 mattress from Ikea .

    Hi All,

First post here and really not sure where else to ask for help.

Bought mattress from John Lewis, the mattress is terrible. Collapsed in the middle and gives no support. Spoke to Johnlewis after having the mattress for 12 weeks as per instructions. They say nothing wrong with mattress but its terrible. Both my wife and I are in pain from the mattress. As it stands we have had the mattress less than a year. Cost of mattress lost of lost sleep and £1800. We are close to binning the mattress and getting a new one. Has anyone had problems with a mattress before and who to ask for help. I can supply all email correspondence if that helps.

    Many Thanks in advance.

What type of mattress is it, and what type of bed base do you have? Some mattresses are not suitable for use with slats, some not with divans. It can make a big difference. Maybe you've had the bed base for many years and that is what needs replacing?
