Car Insurance Excess

I have a question re excess.

My car has been written off by and received an offer letter which is not as bad as I feared. However, they are taking off the excess (which I expected) but a lot more than I had thought.

I have a voluntary excess of £100 (does the higher you offer her reduce the cost of your policy?) and according to the paperwork each driver has accidental damage of £300, but they are taking off £700 as my excess. Should it not be £400? Am I missing something?

If you don't know where they get the figure from then ask the insurer

(Was there a liable third party involved? If so you can pursue them or their insurer to reimburse all your uninsured losses including your excess,)
