Having banked with First Direct for almost 30 years now, I've seen it move from a cutting edge bank, using the latest technologies, to a bit of a laggard. And I see it's now lost its number one customer service position.

Innovations such as cheque deposits via app still haven't reached First Direct, even though parent HSBC has it, and they can't even provide a timescale for bringing it in.

Time after time, First Direct lags behind the competition, presumably because it's easier just to rest on its laurels, and if you have to phone them the old days of quick answering have vanished.

No wonder they're dropping the charge - maybe customers are deserting them for better interest rates (hardly difficult!), better service, and banking that doesn't always lag behind other banks.
