Aggregator Car Insurance Quotes

Hi,

I’m looking for some advice before I purchase car insurance for my daughters first car. She’s not yet passed her test but has had a provisional licence for a year.

When I use all the primary aggregator sites there’s a huge swing on quotes from circa £300 to over £2000. The cheaper quotes are from insurers I’ve never heard of and the more expensive (more akin to what we were expecting) are much more expensive.

All the quotes returned are based on the same driver criteria entered. I want the best value for money but I also want to be sure she’s covered appropriately. Do I go for the £300 pound option, a midpoint £600 option or for a big player like Admiral who are quoting £1,600 or more?

Thanks ever so much. It’d be useful to know your thoughts,

Pat

The secret is to look at the policy - the excess, what it covers, admin charges and also research the company's performance in dealing with claims.

Don't just choose one without understanding what you're buying.

I suspect the devil is in the details, which in this case is most likely the high excess on the lower priced policies, in addition to the level of customer service.

Bear in mind that some names you will not of heard of may well be insurance brokers rather than branded providers. This can mean higher or extra admin fees (sometimes they charge broker fees).

Take careful note of the filters as well, if you specifically confirm whether you want for example legal cover or courtesy car cover then this will give you a more accurate comparison.

I've got years of NCB and even now there is still a massive price difference between the providers. The highest quote is 4 times the smallest quote and if I take the "average" quote in my case as about £650 I still get quotes from providers who I've used before and found to be good at around £450.

A lot of it is simple risk profiling and all the different factors can just mean a huge difference between premiums from different underwriters.

I wouldn't personally put Admiral (or any of their brands) significantly above other providers - but I wouldn't say they're a bad provider.

If you get similar quotes then they can be different providers using the same underwriters. In some cases they even share the same call centres so there can be absolutely no difference there.

Be careful how you are structuring the policy - will this be your daughter's car with her as main driver? If so feel free to add additional lower risk drivers on.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
