SMETS2: when to switch after installation
We moved into a property a few months ago and ended up on the default supplier, which was Spark Energy. In the interests of picking their cheapest tariff we picked 'Smart Saver', which turned out to be their smart meter tariff (it wasn't immediate obvious that's what 'Smart' referred to). This was quite useful as it allowed us to swap out the old Economy 7 meter (we don't use much in the night so E7 was the wrong tariff) and avoid having to dangerously climb a ladder to take readings.
We're now the proud owners of an Aclara SGM1412-B which is a SMETS2 meter and it's registered with the network and the IHD is working nicely. We'd now like to switch to a provider who isn't charging 20p a kWh. How long should we wait for all the backoffice stuff to settle down before we try and switch? Are there any issues to be aware of when switching with a SMETS2 meter?

Want to save money? Don't delay, switch today
Issues? Not all energy suppliers support smart metering (which means they will use it as a dumb meter, so don't dispose of that ladder just yet0 -
So far I have not seen evidence of the DCC in action that smart switching, using SMETS1/2 meters is working.
No reports of it happening so far on here at least. Any updates anyone ?
.Just get switching, 20 p/kwh is awful. I ve just switched at 12p/kwh with Symbio Energy0 -

From what I can gather, SmartDCC are currently building a switching platform - but this sounds a like a price comparison site where you can push a button to switch, rather than waiting 3 weeks. There's also the infrastructure being build for switching SMETS1 meters. But I'm unclear what the infrastructure is regarding SMETS2 meters - don't they already talk to the DCC?
Spark's website is still telling me I have a smart meter appointment booked for last week, so no movement at that end.Just get switching, 20 p/kwh is awful. I ve just switched at 12p/kwh with Symbio Energy
Are there any issues with smaller providers not supporting smart meters? It's not a massive pain to climb the ladder every 3 months - the IHD is a good enough monitor of usage for day to day use. But I hope we have at least got rid of the troublesome Economy 7 tariff...0 -
Found a very useful thread:
https://forum.ovoenergy.com/smart-meter-booking-and-installations-66/smets2-smart-meter-installation-6181
which shows exactly my meter. It says that, when a smart meter is installed, the account goes into 'billing suspension' at which point no bills can be issued, until such time as the system is fully configured. This is presumably what Spark are showing me at the moment, including the 'your upcoming smart meter fitting date' banner. That thread suggests commissioning takes about a month.0 -
IHD is now showing its CID and MPAN, so it's obviously made contact with the network. Spark's account page is now showing no past readings and changed the meter number, so evidently the information has got through to them too. No current readings, and still has the banner on the top about my 'upcoming' appointment.0
