Half the electrics just stopped working
Hi,
I own a 2008 Mitsubishi Colt with about 91k miles on the clock.
It's a good runner and nothing major has ever gone wrong in the 4 years that I've had it.
On a 4 hour drive recently, halfway through, the stereo (recently fitted) and dash clock turned off. Once I got home and checked more thoroughly, it looks like some electricals have stopped working - stereo, inside lights, central locking.
Car still starts and runs fine, the headlights, turn lights, windows, wipers, etc still work.
The car is still usable (using keys for locking/unlocking) but any ideas on what might be wrong? I'm guessing a fuse (or two) is blown.
I'm rubbish at doing anything on the car myself but would like to have some idea of what might be wrong before I get it looked at by someone.
Thanks.

Yes sounds like a fuse.
Have a look at the fuse section on your manual or online and see which one corresponds to the things that aren't working.
It will have a diagram and be numbered so you know which one it is.
To test it you need a working fuse. Sometimes there are spares or you could maybe just use one with the same rating e.g. 10A from a different part of the fuse box.
If it works just buy a replacement from the nearest garage.0 -
Identified the fuse (it was responsible for about 4 different things) but it kept blowing soon as I put a new one in. Had to call a mechanic who figured out that it was the bloody stereo that I had fitted at Halfords recently that was causing the problem. Soon as the stereo was disconnected, the fuse stopped blowing and everything else is working as it should.
Just written to Halfords asking for it to be replaced or a full refund.Yes sounds like a fuse.

Why write, just pop into the store where you got it as that is what you are going to have to do anyway. As it was obviously working at some time they will want to look at it. If less than a month old they will replace it, if over they will send it away for repair.0

my experience with Halfords dealing with a P/E parking ticket (after leaving the car with them for the fitting), I would rather have things in writing so I can progress to a formal complaint if they get difficult. Why write, just pop into the store where you got it as that is what you are going to have to do anyway. Halfords are a national chain. Why not go to your nearest - preferably with the sales receipt or other proof of purchase - and get them to sort it?0

Please see explanation below. I'd prefer to have it confirmed in writing that they will sort it out in so-and-so manner rather than drive out to a Halfords only to be told that I need to do something else first or to take a hike to London. I'm in no hurry, happy to wait for a responsePlus, given (after leaving the car with them for the fitting), I would rather have things in writing so I can progress to a formal complaint if they get difficult.0 -

Not all Halfords are subject to parking charges in their car parks.0
