Universal credit/tax credit - triplets

Hi,
My gf and I have 14wk old triplets, we're not clear whether we're entitled to child tax credits, from what I've read I think we might be and should be able to create a new claim but wondered if anybody on here has experience of this. I'm not currently working but hope to be in the next few months, my gf is getting statutory maternity pay.
Anyone sharing their experience would be great to hear from.
Many thanks
FM

  • You can't claim tax credits as a new claim but can claim universal credit.

You will only be able to get Child Tax Credits if you already have a claim for Working Tax Credits in which case the CTC can be added to that.

If this is not the case, as _shel says, it will be UC. Lots of information on UC here https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/universal-credit/

You can do benefit calculations here https://www.entitledto.co.uk/

Normally you can only get help with two children but with triplets you should get help for all three.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

you would need t apply for universal credit as tax credits are not accepting new applicants now the UC system is taking over. :-)
