Is this any different from the tax payer paying for other things that aren't means tested? Free nursery places for example? Schools? Hospital treatment? I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you per se, and I certainly don't think people who have their own houses with lots of equity have worked harder, perhaps just been luckier, but the tax payer pays for lots of things and usually the elderly have at least paid into the system,
you miss the point, the objective of OP's plan is personal gain at taxpayer's expense:
    a) pass wealth down a generation and avoid tax thereon
    b) plead resulting poverty so that the taxpayer has to fund their care

I get your point, and actually in a perfect world care would be like the NHS, paid for by taxes and free for all at the point of use.

That would need higher taxes though, if it was funded by a massive hike in inheritance tax i’d be fine with it!

If care home places are ever funded by the taxpayer, those who stay in their own homes with carers coming in will feel hard done by because they will still be paying all their own housing costs.

I hope they would feel glad they were able to stay at home, I would!

I certainly don’t feel jealous of people who get their rent paid by HB.
