Hi,

I am coordinator for an MS Society Group.
We have been approached by a gentleman who would like to volunteer to drive our minibus.

He is aged 72. Unfortunately he did not retain the D1 entitlement when he renewed his license and I am trying to find out how he gates it added.

I know he needs to complete Form D2 and D4 and submit to DVLA. In accordance with DVLA website there is no mention that he would have to resit driving test.
However, our MIDAS trainer has told me he would have to resit his driving test. Is this correct?

I phoned DVLA, but as I am not the driver, they declined to discuss with me.:(

Presumably he'd need to contact the DVLA himself to get all of his categories renewed or find out what tests he needs to pass in order to use them.

It might also be worth checking with your insurance company about his cover.

He currently doesn't have D1 entitlement.
To add a category, he needs to pass the appropriate test. Whether he had it in the past or not makes no difference.

D2 and D4 are applications for a licence (D4 is medical). Just applying doesn't grant entitlement alone... There's always the possibility that just applying will lead to it being re-granted without a test, but does he want to rely on that in the event of an issue?

Thanks guys. I do appreciate he could apply to DVLA himself. We try to make it easy for our volunteers. It is quite expensive for us to arrange a medical and apply, to then have his application rejected and be told he must resit. I have already checked, we are insured for any driver over 35.

I was hoping someone might know.

If he's a volunteer does he need D1? Will the "not for hire or reward" exemption apply?

Unfortunately, we must abide by the MS Society Rules which require he has D1 and MIDAS training.

    Hi Marlot,

I can't thank you enough. Many thanks for the links. My Doctor charges £250 for completion of form D4. It is difficult raising money and I would rather our funds went toward helping people with MS.

I have copied the relevant text for anyone else who may have a similar problem >
YES IT CAN!!!! I have just done it and am 74. You need a medical first and as per my tip elsewhere on the Forum, I recommend you use the excellent services of https://www.doctorsonwheels.com who will charge you £51, and you then have an agreed rendezvous point near you where they come with a doctor and an assistant in a kind of motorcaravan-!!!-surgery and they talk you through all the form filling. You will need to take your latest specs prescription plus any other medical documents you may have relevant to any medical conditions. For me it took 15 mins. They checked my blood pressure and were very satisfied at 140/74. They fill in the forms and you send them off to DVLA (no fee required) and in about 10 days you get your full licence back. Most GPs charge rather more than £51. I recently heard of a similar outfit who charge £58.
Unless you have a cardiac/severe sight/diabetic condition it is not likely you will encounter any difficulty. The new licence will last for three years. It will be a plastic one and you will need to send your old plastic one with a photo if the one you have is no longer a true representation. And just to finish off, I also recently re-graded my motorhome to 3.8 tonnes after discovering that at 3.5 tonnes it had been classified as a diesel car and because of its emissions was costing me £500 a year in car tax....now I am back to Private HGV status costing just £165per annum. Massive thanks to SVTech for their help in getting all of this accomplished. Suggest you check out their website. Loads of useful info.
