We've over 800m of boundary and we must cut both sides of the hedges alongside the council road - about 200m. If we didn't, Highways would do it and send us the bill!
We also cut both sides where our hedge runs 100m along a private road, but that's a courtesy gesture. It makes sense to have it done while the tractor is here. In return, the owners of the road cut our verge.
The only other place we do two sides is between our garden and our disabled neighbours, who rent. When their landlord's gardener comes to trim some leylandii, we slip him £15 to trim the other side of the beech hedge we planted for privacy.
Beech makes a great hedge; much nicer than leylandii. Hornbeam is similar and better on poorer soil. Both retain dead leaves in winter.0
