broke my TV now AA say they won't cover me!

I have £40,000 worth of contents cover on an annual policy, costing £111.

I was switching my AV amp on and off again and something in the signal fluctuation blew the plasma TV. I consider this an "accident" as I was messing around with the amp and by mistake broke the TV.

They tell me accidents are when you drop things, so I am unlikely to be covered. In my opinion, I know that I broke the TV, by mistake, which fits my definition of an "accident".

Does anyone have experience of this kind of breakage? I doubt very much that a little old TV repair man can fix plasmas in this throw-away economy...

It is not accidental damage, it is an electrical breakdown- you'd be better off trying to pursue the retailer.

Yes, sensible after he's already told them what has happened to it.

If he puts in a claim now, depending on the value of the TV he'd either have Fraud Loss adjustors coming to his house or conversation management. Either of those two would through up the obvious in this plan.

    how old is the TV?
if its over 12 months old then unless the make or retailer have a longer warranty than that your footing the bill.
Also who told you what had "blown" the tv?

sometimes extended warranties are worth having.

Plasmas can be fixed. Given your description, it MAY only be a fuse. Usually there are several fuses to protect vital components in the event of a surge. If it is the screen that is blown it will almost certainly be unecconomical to repair.

PS: I am surprised switching AV Amp caused damage to the TV. Good quality amps ramp up to avoid damaging other components - e.g. speakers.

    Hey hey!

I got it repaired for £275 (ouch!!!) so now I have a 37" LCD and a 42" plasma - oops!

No claim necessary, no excess paid, no ramped up premiums, karma is restored.

    Thanks for all your feedback...

P.S. I couldn't contact the manufacturer - it's a 3 year old Relisys, so as well as being out of warranty, the company has gone bust!
