Churchill Home Insurance Premium

Morning all, Churchill increased my Home Insurance quote this year based on the spurious sentence 'As you made a change to your policy in the last 12 months...' - there have been no changes for several years. However, I have had two successful PPI claims, one against Egg, one against HBOS this past year. Inexplicably, the lady on the renewal line muttered 'Egg' whilst reading my notes and trying to justify the increase. I believe Egg, HBOS and Churchill are part of the same group so are they trying to recoup a portion of PPI payouts through increased premiums in other parts of the business? Has anyone else experienced similar?

Whenever you are unhappy with your insurer the route to go down is a complaint in line with their complaints procedure

Then if you are not happy with the reply or they ignore you for 8 weels you can escalate to the FOS for their adjudication at no cost to you

But MSE advice is never simply renew (insurers can charge what they like, it's up to you whether to accept the renewal quote)

See the MSE guide to cheap home insurance for advice on how to shop around (link in quick links at the top of the page)

Did you, by any chance, call a helpline related to your Home Insurance Legal Protection cover - to ask about your Egg PPI?

If you did, and they gave you any advice, they might regard that as a 'claim'.

Even if they gave no advice (e.g. they just told you the policy doesn't cover legal advice on PPI claims), they may have recorded it as an 'incident'.

It might be worth finding out how they've recorded the 'Egg related' information, just in case it's ended up on an insurance database that's accessible to other insurers.
  • Thanks for the quick responses. I didn't call anyone about the Egg policy, but did use advice on this site to apply. Egg paid up in about two weeks, but HBOS only paid after 9 months when I went to the Ombudsman. I got the insurance premium down to below last years, but it was the principle of the arbitrary rise that rankled.
