UPVC window locked but no key!

Hi,

I bought a house a while back, but one of the bedroom windows is locked and I have no key! Can anybody tell me the best way of removing this lock so I can install a new one. The type of lock is similar to this http://www.handlestore.com/product_review.php?prd_id=37&cat_id=6.

Unfortunetly, in a moment of madness, I took a drill to the lock, so I don't think a locksmith is going to be an option :(

Thanks for your help

Its just held by a screw at the top and bottom, you can see the cover over the top one in that picture.

I would have thought drilling it would have exposed enough to turn the lock, but if that failed then to remove the bottom screw your going to have to remove the handle, if I was doing it I would use an angle grinder to cut straight through the handle just above the lock part. A hacksaw would do the same thing , if a little slower. Leave the top screw in when cutting it to keep it stable.

The risk of breaking the window is high when working on it, so cover all windows with something like a sheet of plywood.
  • Is that the only window that has a lock? if you have other windows with the same handles the keys for those might have actually worked if you hadn't drilled it, does oops cover it? :D

Hi I fit windows and sometimes fit replacement handles after they have been forced open (ie excessive force when locked) ,so give it a good twist then the screwes come out easy. so no need for drastic action

    hope this helps Alex
  • most window handle have a universal key and are pretty poor quality all you need to do is get a flat bladed screwdriver not too big put it into the key hole and turn it this works 99 times out of a 100 .

small bladed pocket knives can normaly get the lock turned then just unscrew and fit new lock.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

Thanks everyone - I am now feeling a little stupid having drilled into the lock! :)
  • I know it might be too late for the OP, but I've used keys from my little luggage padlocks for these sort of locks.

just wanted to say (I realise this is old but it came up on Google pretty high) that I had the same problem as the OP. Just bought a house, the old kids' room never had an open window and a small flat-blade sorted me out!

    Cheers!
  • Another one who has just got to say thanks for the flat-headed screwdriver suggestion! OH and I bought our house a few months ago and the window on the landing has never opened. Thanks to this thread, using the flat-headed screwdriver has saved me the drama of having OH attacking the lock with his drill! Thanks again! :T
