Cancellation due to non-payment!!

In February I declared my car SORN, I called my insurance company (Go skippy)to ask them to cancel my insurance as I had moved and they said ok but asked me to drop them an email. I forgot with all the stress of moving (I’m kicking myself) and then because I’d moved I didn’t hear anything until a text telling me my insurance was cancelled. I’ve spoken to them but they have said because I didn’t write there’s nothing they can do. They have asked for the SORN notification and will try to write to the underwriters to try and back date the cancellation. They would not accept email confirmation and I have to wait 2-4 weeks for the SORN.
I pick up my new car on Monday and I am trying to insure it, do I have to rick the box to say I’ve had Insurance cancelled? I managed to get insurance with o2 drive as they said non-payment isn’t a problem if I’m paying outright but it’s unaffordable, insurers have flat out refused to insure me and now I’m Panicking. Does anyone have any suggestions 😫

I suspect there's a minor detail missing...
You phoned the insurer.
They said "We want it in writing".
You didn't put it in writing.
They cancelled without the written confirmation.
Well, great, that's what you wanted, right?
Oh, no, wait - the subject line suggests they cancelled for non-payment. So you cancelled the DD on a live policy, mid-term, before getting confirmation of the termination of the policy cancellation?0 -
Yes i cancelled the direct debit and called to cancel... I know I messed up not writing in, I’m asking for advice on if I can fix it0

All you can do is appeal to them and if they still won’t reconsider, go to the ombudsman. However, that’s not going to sort your problem quickly and I don’t fancy your chances of it working at all.
In the meantime, you’ll just have to declare it as a cancelled policy and borrow the money to pay the annual premium up-front.0 -

It's a pretty grim scenario to be in.
Most insurance companies will ask if you've ever had a policy cancelled or refused, so it's not just for 5 years it's high premiums for life.
Unfortunately i don't see any way around it.All your base are belong to us.0
