Looking like Starling will be the best option then. Only slight concern was 300 withdrawal limit per day on ATMs, but prob not going to be an issue. Will also have my Barclaycard for hotels and other larger transactions. Thanks all for help.

Halifax Clarity or even Post Office Money would be better for overseas credit card spending because of exchange rate & no transaction fee

    (other credit cards are available:D)

Tandem cashback credit card is worth taking. Uses the Mastercard rate for exchange and cashback on purchases.

Used Tandem for purchases and Starling for cash withdrawals on my last few holidays.

I've actually gone full Starling as found them so good.

We recently use Starling on a 3 week trip across Russia.
It worked flawlessly for cash withdrawals, and card payments everywhere.
    Highly recommended.

I will also be travelling to Japan later in the year and I have been looking into this myself. I have been speaking to a Japanese native about how much cash is used and relied upon as a payment method and she said it depends on where you are travelling. If you are sticking to the main tourist areas then cards are mostly accepted. If you are going more off the beaten track then cash does become more important.

For my trip (after a lot of research), I have applied for a Halifax Clarity card for card expenditure but I will be taking some cash as well, as I would if I were visiting anywhere abroad. Most of my trip will be along the more traditional tourist routes though.
