Beware - Late Payment on 0% card - interest charged

Options
We currently have a 0% interest MBNA card. Last month partly due to the postal strike and the fact we were away for a week our payment was two days late. For this they charged us a £12 fee. However, they also charged us interest, which was a lot more than £12!! They were also going to remove the 0% completely but we rang and got them to put us back on it from next month. Couldn't get them to refund the interest though. Be Warned!

    Hi sarahdf10

Welcome to MSE & the credit card boards!

In these circumstances, might it be an idea to check your account and pay online?

Most lenders routinely withdraw promotional rates if you break the terms & conditions. Congratulations on getting yours restored.

I've recently received notice from Virgin (MBNA) that my T&C's are changing from January 2008.

The previous wording "we may withdraw promotional rates" is being replaced with "we will withdraw promotional rates".

I expect yours will change in the same way, so you might not be as lucky next time.

Are you aware that you can pay your bill in many other (far more reliable) ways?...

    1. Direct debit (puts an end to late payments once and for all)
    2. Over the counter at your bank branch
    3. Over the counter at any bank
    4. By telephone banking
    5. By internet banking

To rely on the postal system, in the midst of severe disruption and whilst you reduced your payment window by a week due to your being "away", was very brave indeed!
