The DWP can pay money into any current account that has a sort code and account number, or an IBAN.

You should be able to open at least a Basic account with any UK high street bank. You could also try Starling or Monzo. I believe Starling handles most of the DWP payments. Not that this should make a difference as to where the payments are being made. The advantage over Monese is that all of the above offer FSCS protection.

Don't forget to advise The Pensions Service.

  • Hi, I opened a Monese bank account a few months ago. I have my state pension paid in and I have direct debits going out. So far it’s all run like clockwork, no complaints from me at all. Just give Pensions Service your new sort code and account number and you’re ready to roll. :)
  • Thank you Bellabooski, that has helped a lot.

Are you not concerned about the lack of FSCS protection?

You don't need a credit history to open a U.K. bank account, it's just the facilities offered at opening will be restricted such as overdrafts and further credit facilities. 1000's of people arrive everyday in the U.K. and open high st bank accounts, although I do bank with and recommend Starling too. Welcome home.
  • Thanks for your reply and welcoming me home, very kind.Take care.
