Elderly Relatively Paying for cover Twice - can you get refund?

Good day to you all,
I was recently asked to look into existing Drainage and Plumbing insurance cover for an elderly relative. I discovered that for at least 4 years (possibly as much as 9 years) they have been paying for 2 lots of cover for exactly the same thing.

British Gas Home Care & United Utilities Home Serve.

When asked why... the relative said one covered her on her land and the other on street. This is obviously not the case, and in fact she is paying twice for almost identical cover

I have advised to get my aunt (who has power of attorney anyway) to cancel Homeserve (because they are an abhorrent company anyway).

My query is would there be any claim for a refund??? The figures really stack up even on the shortest time frame.

Many thanks for your thoughts... :o

If the cover is the same, then usually it would be the last policy bought Insurance company you would contact to request backdated cancellation. This would need to be in writing, with a copy of the first Insurance arranged.

This might be treated as a dual insurance situation, where each Insurers only provides a 50% refund and the Insurance policy wanted is continued. It is 50% by each on the basis that each was on risk and would have contributed towards a loss.

There can be 2 types of cover. One that covers plumbing, draingage etc within the footing of the house i.e internal and under the house. Then there can be a policy, which covers external pipes and drainage from house up to the point, where the local water company takes over responsibility.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

I suggest you or the person with LPA rin gs them up and asks, then follows up in writing, with a claim and a suggested amount.

In the mean while cancel the DD or standing order, and check all the other DD / SO to make sure they are for what they should be and are still wanted.
