Old Style Daily Sunday 11 August

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

    Good morning folks.

After a mostly bright and sunny day yesterday I've woken to dark clouds and wet pavements.

I got rid of a huge amount of decluttered stuff from DM's place yesterday and spent a lovely few minutes flattening twelve shoe boxes ready for the next visit to to tip.

Today would be my late brother's 68th birthday as well as my youngest nephew's 29th birthday. A sweet and sour kind of day.

No word yet from social work about respite so we're working on a plan to allow me at least two days back in my own home. :j Next week is too busy with boiler service, new blind, dentist etc.

Now, I hope that everyone is enjoying a long lie in. Thoughts to those who are struggling. Happy Sunday to all.

Good morning Gers and all who will be here later.

A bright morning here though there is rain forecast later. I need to get rid of a lot of fallen leaves this morning.

There's a little Robin pecking away at the food I put out a few minutes ago, and a hugely fat pigeon is waiting.

This evening I'll be making chicken shawarma, spicy kebabs, mint raita plus guacamole because I like it, also I get to eat a bit of the avocado because it is a biggun.

In the time it took to write that, the Robin has gone, replaced by a small rat. Mr pigeon doesn't care one bit.

Hope everyone has as good a day as possible.

Thanks for the thread gers and hugs to all those in need.

Still windy here, another day of hunkering down I think.

    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester

  • Morning folks and thanks GERS. Your DM sounds to be doing so much better, which is good to hear.

We have a break from the rain until this evening they so. That's good as we had quite a few torrential bursts yesterday. The poor pots are awash.

When my friend was here from Oz she told me all about the wonders of celery and how much better she feels for a glass of celery juice first thing. I finally got round to reading up about it yesterday and the diet certainly does promise good things. Right says I, I will start the diet today. I have just juiced a bunch of celery and am supposed to drink the whole lot first thng every morning. I didn't expect so much juice from one bunch and it's far from the most palatable thing I have tasted! I think I have fallen at the first hurdle as there is no way I can drink all that every morning!

Nothing much planned for today so a lazy day for me I think. Watching stuff on catch up and reading my book is the most excitement my day has in store.

Have a good day folks if you can and ((HUGS)) for all in need/want of them and of course our absent friends. Take care all xx

Grey clouds this morning, don't think it will be long before the rain arrives. I did put the washing out yesterday along with another few loads, got all three lots of bedding washed, dried and put back on the beds, just had some towels to put on the rack to finish off when it started to rain around 3pm.

I've done the ironing this morning and cleaned and tidied the upstairs yesterday so I feel that the house is once again my own! I spent a few hours catching up on Gardeners World last night, very relaxing.

Off to meet a friend for brunch today, so many people to catch up with before I go back to school on Thursday.

TA that drink doesn't sound too good, I struggle to have anything first thing apart from peppermint tea.
Glad your DM has perked up Gers, must make such a difference.
Your dinner sounds good AOD, apart from the Avocado, something I really don't like (much to the amazement of the Australians!).

Have a good Sunday, take care. XX

    Morning all

Its a bright and sunny day here but still a bit blowy, I have stripped the beds and got them on a hot wash they can go out on the line later.

Got to pack the ebay parcels today and make up the overnight oats and remake the beds, we also need to go to the shop as i forgot a handful of essential things on the shopping list yesterday.

We will get out for a nice walk mid morning and then hopefully have a rest and maybe a film this afternoon.

I think we are back on for a bbq tonight will do some baked sweet potatoes with it which we are loving atm.

TA the thought of drinking all that celery juice in the morning would make me a but queesy !

    Have good days all xx

TA yuk, I don't like celery at the best of times.

We've been married 40 years today, how is that possible! Steve got me a beautiful bunch of flowers. He's sent a photo of my wedding flowers to the florist and she made a bouquet based on that. Probably the first romantic gesture he's made in 40 years, His sister was shocked when I asked him if Laura had given him the idea but he just said that he didn't blame me for asking given his track record.

We're going out to lunch and then will walk Ziggy for our celebration.
  • My lazy day isn't going to plan! In view of a decent forecast I thought I would wash my bedding and get it pegged out. Guess what? Yes, it's now raining so all the bedding will be draped around upstairs! I have just got out my spare set to re-make the bed with but I much prefer my wet set!

And as there will be no Day 2 of the Celery Juice Diet, the remaining 2 bunches of celery languishing in the fridge will be transformed into Delia's Celery and Nutmeg soup instead! That's well tried and tested regularly so I know I will enjoy that! It will make lots of bags to freeze and keep me going a while.

I am in agreement with your Aussie friends CAMELOT! How can anyone not like Avocado! My breakfast every single morning is a poached egg, half an avocado sliced and sprinkled with paprika and a thin slice of ham. I never tire of it but occasionally I could be tempted into making REDRUBY's o/n oats!

Right back to it, catch up tv and reading is now on hold!

Editing to add Happy Anniversary SNOOZER and STEVE. Have a lovely day.

Happy anniversary Snoozer. What a lovely idea for the flowers.
I'm up to date with ironing (most unusual) but I did it yesterday whilst listening to the footie on the radio. Worked well so might do the same next week. Mind you line drying and careful folding has reduced the quantity of stuff to be ironed and reduced the creases in stuff that does need ironing. The wisdom of grandparents and parents is finally starting to sink in.
A quick question for wise folk on here - can I freeze mashed potato? If so, any tips on best way to do it?
In the past I would just have thrown the potatoes away but with a reducing food waste mindset (which I'm trying to develop) I'd like to try and salvage the spuds.

Blackcats, I freeze mash quite often, just in a freezer bag or a plastic tub, it tastes like just made when it's defrosted.
