Paint over dark to light

Options
Need to paint over quite dark brown paint.
Partner says use grey undercoat then the light colour.
I will have maybe three days to paint a large room. Got to clean it first too.
I say three coats of white.

It's not money I need to save but time
So two people, 3 days.
The woodwork is fine just needs cleaning, the windows dont need painting, and the ceiling and walls will all be the same colour.
Do I go undercoat, then white or three coats white?

If you're not painting woodwork, you don't need an undercoat.

Get a big pot of good quality white and get busy.

    Buy some trade white.

    Espeicially given the timeframe.

"trade" is code for, better coverage (as a cost of less overall area covered, but meaning less coats), and quicker drying to get on a second coat.

I covered bright insane red with magnolia and needed no undercoat. Especially grey, again that is a dark coloour surely so if darks caused issues.... And buy a decent roller appropriate to the paint type (and a decent brush for edges etc! etc!).

    As time is important

If you can clear the room that will help a lot.

12" roller if fit enough, 9" will take longer.
Get an adjustable pole makes it much easier and faster

Decent step/platform for the cutting in at the wall ceiling join where the roller won't reach, as same colour you could use an open end roller.

Empty clean and prep 1st day with 2 people.

Good prep is the key to a decent finish
Decent dust sheets to trap the dust.

2nd day paint, start early and run late 2 coats easy might squeeze a 3rd if arms not tired.

Once done your woodwork may not look so good with a fresh white room.

    Thanks getmore.
It's a fairly empty room. What's in there can be moved to the middle leaving a whole load of space to walk round. Currently skirtings are grey and will hopefully come up nice. More bothered about the radiator which is dirty yellow coloured. If you know of something good to paint that with?

I'd try one coat emulsion. Despite the name it might need a second coat but very unlikely it would need a third. Years ago I used white one coat over a very dark grey which was almost perfect after 1 coat.

Add to #5 damp j cloths to tidy up any mistakes, and a radio.

Even stuff in the middle is a pain when doing the ceiling.

I did a pale pink to dark red in dulux one coat a few years ago, it took 3 coats to completely cover it and yes to j cloths. cheers.

I think I can get most stuff out. Theres a table but pretty sure the legs come off so it can be moved.
    Cheers for all your help.

Update, despite time being my biggest problem, other problems came up. Dont they always?
So the room was filthy, took a day to clean. Its had two coats of trade emulsion in white. It needs a third but if I didnt care much it would be ok as is.
As these things go, another entire room needed stripping. That's done and now it needs papering.
So another weekend of my life given to this thing.
For anyone who cares I bought Leyland trade emulsion and leyland quick dry gloss. The emulsion covered the dark really well, it's my pride that's says to be perfect it must have a third coat. And in this heat the gloss dried in 20 minutes.
    Thanks all for the help.
And one should never waste a stunning hot weekend on such things.
