Stolen Identity

Options
Hi all, my partner has received a worrying letter from a water company in the north of England asking for almost 6k unpaid water bills. He’s never lived anywhere other than Hampshire so he called them and they’ve told him that the person living at the address gave his details and has lived their since 2013! He’s dealing with them and providing evidence that he’s never lived there so we’re hoping it will get resolved, but we’re really concerned that someone has stolen his identity and it’s only just been picked up 6 years down the lone. There’s nothing on his credit file to suggest that any credit has been taken out but I’m wondering if it’s all under this other address up north. Is there anyway to check? He’s already got bad credit and we’ve been working really hard to sort his debts and are finally getting somewhere, it would be awful to find out that his credit is being held back by someone else using his identity. What’s most worrying is he appears to have his DOB. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It’s direct from the water company.

Maybe what he needs is a CIFAS registration.

Thank you. I read that Cifas can cause issues with his credit file, is that correct?

how does someone rack up a 6k water debt. Surley it gets cut off before anywhere near 6k. Did the water company just continue to supply water when this person was always in arrears

It’s against the law to knowingly cut off someone’s water supply even if they owe money.

Unforeseen circumstances such as a leak etc. are a different matter.
