Took my wifes car to a garage, they informed me the AC compressor is finished, offered me two choices.
Put in a "reconditioned" one for £190 or put in a brand new part which would be £280 + labour.
I can see on ebay that a compressor pulled from a vehicle (in working condition) can be bought for £30 inc delivery.
I'm just wondering, what would you do?
Go with the mechanics "reconditioned" unit which comes with a 1 year guarantee, most likely just pulled from a breakers yard.
Or buy your own from ebay, and give it to mechanic to fit (no warranty or guarantee it will work).
Or fit a brand new compressor in?
A fourth option may be illegal (as you need to be licensed to work with AC gas), would be to buy a AC kit, drain the refrigerant into a cylinder, and swap it the compressor yourself with a £30 salvaged compressor, and then fill it back up. I know kits can be had for around £30-£40, dont know where you can get an empty cylinder from though.

I cannot justify putting in a brand new compressor on my wifes car which she drives for 1000 miles a year. A reconditioned AC from the garage is risky as it could break down after 12 months leaving me back to square one and £190 out of pocket.0
