Deceased relative

Options
My sister-in-law died intestate with no assets (there were some outstanding debts such as utilities which were all settled) in October 2010. There was nothing within the estate to pay funeral costs, my wife and I did that. Her daughter, an only child of a single mother, was at university at the time. My sister-in-law had mortgages on a property before she moved into rented accommodation, we have the dates these were taken out and the providers. As there were no assets we did not apply for probate or to be administrators, we did not think there would be any necessity, the timeline may now not allow this. Knowing what my sister-in-law was like I would guess she took out PPI but I can't be certain. I appreciate that my niece can apply but if the value of the estate is under £5k but we don't know the value of any claim.

Given that most mortgage PPI claims are not upheld and the length of time that has elapsed since her passing (which means the lender is unlikely to now hold any records) i think this may be a futile exercise. Add to that the lack of probate etc.....
